Most of us go through our day without really thinking about our exposure to EMF radiation. We wake up, check our phones, use our smart appliances, sit down at our computer and never think about the potential danger long-term exposure to this radiation may pose.
There are many products that have been released that can help us minimize our exposure and protect our bodies from this radiation (see this article for more info).
One type of product that is growing in popularity as more and more people understand this risk, is EMF protection clothing, and that's what I want to cover in depth today.
In this article, I'm going to try my best to strip away the hype and hypothesis around this topic, and answer the real questions, such as: how does this clothing even function? Can it really shield me from my phone’s radiation? And which products are worth buying—or skipping?
Whether you're a skeptic, a concerned parent (like how I began this journey), someone battling EHS, or just here because you're curious, I'm going to break it all down for you.
Here's a table of contents in case there is a certain section you want to skip to, like the best available products:
What Is EMF Radiation (And why should I care?
Let’s start simple.
EMF stands for electromagnetic field—a type of energy created by electrically charged objects.
Some EMFs are natural (like sunlight), but the ones people are concerned about, are the human-made ones.
These fall into two main categories:
- Low-Frequency EMFs
- Sources: Power lines, household wiring, refrigerators, hairdryers—basically anything plugged into a wall (or drawing power from a battery).
- Radiofrequency (RF) EMFs
- Sources: Cell phones, Wi-Fi routers, Bluetooth headphones, smart meters, 5G towers.
- How they work: These are the waves that keep you connected. Every time you send a text, stream Netflix, or even use wireless headphones, your devices send and receive RF signals, which will emit EMF radiation.
So, why does this matter?
Studies continue to show that prolonged exposure to EMF radiation can be harmful to our health.
As we continue to use more and more technology and are exposed to a greater amount of RF radiation from cell towers, WiFi, cell phones, etc., our exposure and our risk will continue to increase.
Here are a few things we know about the harm that this radiation can cause:
Short-term effects:
- Headaches and fatigue: A 2017 systematic review found a significant association between mobile phone use and headaches in both children and adults. They found a dose-response relationship indicating there was a higher risk with increased call duration and frequency. ResearchGate
- Sleep disruption: Studies have observed decreased melatonin levels in individuals exposed to electromagnetic fields, suggesting potential sleep disturbances (read my full article. PMC
- Electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS): The World Health Organization (WHO) acknowledges reports of individuals experiencing symptoms like skin rashes and dizziness attributed to electromagnetic field exposure. World Health Organization (WHO)
Long-term risks:
- Fertility: A 2018 review in Reproductive Biology and Endocrinology linked radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) to reduced sperm motility and viability.
- BMC Research Notes
- Cancer: In 2011, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), part of the WHO, classified RF-EMF as “possibly carcinogenic to humans” (Group 2B) based on an increased risk for glioma, a malignant type of brain cancer, associated with wireless phone use. Comprehensive Cancer Information
- DNA and cellular damage: Studies have suggested that RF-EMF exposure can lead to oxidative stress, which is associated with DNA damage and various chronic diseases. Research indicates that EMF exposure may influence cellular processes, potentially leading to adverse health effects.
- PMC
- Animal studies: The National Toxicology Program (NTP) conducted extensive studies on rodents and found “clear evidence” that high levels of RF radiation exposure led to the development of tumors in the hearts of male rats. These findings have raised concerns about the potential health effects of prolonged RF-EMF exposure.
- PubMed
These are just some of the research and findings related to the health risks of prolonged EMF radiation exposure.
Once people understand these risks, they usually want to find answers and options for protection. In this article, I'm going to stick to talking about EMF protection clothing, which can have many helpful benefits and can be a good solution for some people.
First, though, we need to quickly talk about how EMF shielding works to understand how EMF protection clothing works.
How Does EMF Protection Clothing Work?
Let's cut through all the marketing jargon that you'll see in the EMF protection space, and talk specifically about how products like EMF protection clothing really work. It all has to do with a concept called attenuation.
The Basics of Attenuation
Attenuation, in simple terms, is the gradual weakening of energy as it passes through a material.
Think of it like sunglasses filtering the harsh summer sun, except instead of the UV rays from the sun, it's blocking the invisible EMF radiation from your devices.
Just like your sunglasses can reduce the glare without completely blocking out your vision, EMF shielding fabrics used in clothing weaken radiation to safer, or safe, levels without completely blocking it.
Most EMF protection clothing uses conductive metals—silver, copper, or nickel—woven into the fabric. These metals, when woven close enough together, can attenuate the vast majority of the EMF radiation before it reaches your body.
Understanding Decibel (dB) Ratings for EMF protection clothing
You’ll often see EMF clothing marketed with terms like “blocks 99% of radiation” or “30 dB shielding,” like the sample below.
Here’s what that actually means:
Decibels measure attenuation. The higher the dB, the more radiation is blocked.
- 10 dB = 90% reduction
- 20 dB = 99% reduction
- 30 dB = 99.9% reduction
- 40 dB = 99.99% reduction
Frequency matters. A shirt might block 30 dB at 1 GHz (cell phone range) but only 10 dB at 50 Hz (household wiring). Always check what frequencies the product targets.
For example, if an EMF protection beanie claims “30 dB shielding at 2.4 GHz,” it blocks 99.9% of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radiation but won’t fully protect you from low-frequency EMFs from your fridge.
In general, EMF protection clothing does a much better job at blocking radiofrequency radiation from things like cell phones, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cell towers, etc. than it does at blocking low-frequency radiation like the electric field, and magnetic fields from appliances, wiring, etc.
This is alright though, as RF radiation travels much further and is much more pervasive the majority of the time.
Trading comfort for protection
The reality is, that to provide any protection at all from EMF radiation, these garments usually have to contain one of the metals I mentioned above, often silver.
The more metal in the fabric, the better the protection… but also the heavier and less breathable it's going to be.
Some of the brands I'll talk about below have developed advanced weaving techniques and comfortable outer layers, but you won’t find EMF-blocking activewear that feels like cotton pajamas.
Alright, now that we've gone probably TOO in-depth about how EMF protection clothing works, let's get to some of my favorite products on the market.
Best EMF Protection Clothing
I'm going to outline below some of my favorite EMF protection products and companies.
I'm only going to talk about and recommend products that I have personally tested and worn.
However, since there are SO many different kinds of EMF-blocking clothing items (beanies, baseball hats, shirts, hoodies, belly bands, sweatpants, etc.), I won't be covering everything in this article.
EMF Blocking Beanie (Safesleeve)
EMF protection beanies are probably one of the most popular clothing products you'll find in the space, and there are a lot of good ones out there.
It makes sense because the head is one of the most vulnerable parts of the body to RF radiation exposure.
Also, in my experience (anecdotally), of all the EMF clothing options, EMF protection beanies typically offer the most relief to people with EHS.
The one I've found myself wearing most often though has been this beanie from Safesleeve (that's me wearing it in the picture!)
If you're looking for a beanie that is a nice mix of value, honest radiation protection, and style, this is the one I always recommend.
It's designed with integrated silver fabric shielding that blocks over 99% of RF radiation, including Wi-Fi, 5G, and cell signals.
Another thing that sets this beanie apart from some of the cheaper options on the market is the OEKO-TEX-certified inner liner; which ensures that all the materials are tested for harmful substances and are safe for skin contact.
You'd be surprised by how many companies don't test for these things.
The inner liner is made of 95% bamboo, and I find the material really soft and nice to wear. The beanie also has a nice weight to it.
Overall, I think this beanie from Safesleeve is a great RF-blocking beanie that I find myself wearing all the time.
Other brands that make great EMF protection beanies would be Defendershield and Havn.
EMF Protection Boxers/Underwear (Havn)
EMF Protection boxers and underwear are a game changer for men concerned about fertility, or anyone who carries their phone in their pocket.
I mean let's face it, that's how many people carry their phones with them, they shove them in their pockets without a second thought.
However, studies like this 2014 meta-analysis shows a clear link between cell phone radiation and reduced sperm quality.
Out of all the companies that make anti-radiation boxers, Havn (formerly Lambs) is my top pick.
Their WaveStopper Boxer Briefs block over 99.7% of EMF radiation and are surprisingly comfortable.
They blend pure silver fibers with cotton and they really just feel like an ordinary pair of comfortable boxer briefs. When I've worn them, I never even remember that I put them on because they feel so much like any other boxer briefs I have.
The fabric is moisture-wicking, and the silver fibers make them naturally antimicrobial.
I also appreciate that Havn accepts HSA and FSAs, making affording their quality EMF protection more affordable for lots of people.
Overall, these are the best anti-radiation/EMF protection boxers I've worn, and the ones I most often recommend.

EMF Protection Shirt (Havn)
It might seem silly, the idea of wearing a shirt that blocks EMF radiation, but the reality is that your torso houses some of your most vital organs, like your heart, lungs, and stomach.
So, if you're someone that sits at your computer all day, or with a laptop on your lap, or you just want to protect an important part of your body from EMF radiation, then an anti-radiation shirt might be a great product for you.
I've had the chance to try three different EMF protection shirts, and the best one I've worn has also been from Havn. Their WaveStopper T-shirt has to be the highest quality one I've tried.
Like their boxers I talked about above, their shirt blocks 99.7% of EMF radiation and is naturally anti-microbial.
But what really makes me love this shirt, is how nice it feels to wear. Like the boxers, I usually forget that I'm even wearing it.
You can get 15% off your order from Havn by clicking this link.
EMF Protection Maternity Clothing (Defendershield & Belly Armor)
Purchase my top pick from Amazon.
Pregnancy is one of the most important times to prioritize EMF protection.
If you've read my article on protecting children from EMF radiation then you know that their thinner skulls and developing bodies are especially susceptible to radiation.
Mom and moms-to-be are often surrounded by devices like their phones, laptops, tablets, and smart home devices.
I often recommend a quality EMF protection blanket for this, but another great option, especially if you're moving around a lot, is an EMF-blocking belly band.
My recommendation for this would be the Belly Band from one of my favorite EMF protection companies, Defendershield (you can pick it up from Amazon).
EMF Protection Hoodie (Havn)
The last product I want to talk about is the EMF protection hoodie.
What I like about this for EMF protection is that it combines the benefits of the t-shirt and the beanie we discussed above.
Like the shirt, an EMF-blocking hoodie will protect your vital organs from EMF exposure, and like the beanie, the hood can protect your brain when you most need it to.
I've even just put my over-ear headphones on right over the hood on flights before.
The best hoodie I've tried is again from Havn (formerly Lambs). They really are just leading the EMF-protection clothing space as far as innovation and style go.
You can find some other EMF-blocking hoodies, but most of them are not as comfortable, don't work as well, or are just not designed to look like a regular hoodie.
Some of them even have writing or logos to let everyone around you know that the garment blocks EMF radiation.
Some of my favorite features about this EMF-blocking hoodie from Havn include:
- Blocks 99.7% of EMF radiation: Lab-tested and certified to IEEE-299 standards.
- RFID-safe pockets: Keep your cards and phone shielded from digital theft.
- UV protection (UPF 50+): Blocks 99.5% of harmful UV rays—40x better than regular clothing.
- Unisex fit: Roomy enough to layer but sleek enough to look intentional. (Pro tip: Size down if you prefer a snugger fit.)
- HSA/FSA eligible: You can use your health savings funds for EMF protection.
Overall, I think this is the best EMF protection hoodie available.
Now that we've covered some of my personal favorite EMF protection brands and products, I want to talk about some of the downsides of this type of clothing.
EMF Protection Gloves (DefenderShield)
Purchase my top pick from Amazon.
For those who have EHS or anyone who spends hours typing away on a laptop or using touchscreens, EMF protection gloves can really make a huge difference.
In fact, I wrote an entire article on the best EMF protection gloves (spoiler, my top pick was from Defendershield).
After testing a few different options, the pair from Defendershield really stood out as the highest-quality option.
They block 99% of RF radiation and still work really well with your touchscreen.
If you want a more budget-friendly EMF-blocking gloves option, then this pair from Amazon is what I would recommend.
Here is a video of me reviewing those gloves on my YouTube channel
Downsides of EMF Protection Clothing
I've been talking throughout this article about the benefits of EMF-blocking clothing, but the truth is, it's not a magic fix.
Although the garments I've talked about in this article can, and will, significantly reduce your exposure, they do have limitations.
Let's cover the important ones.
1. False sense of security
The biggest risk of clothing like this (or many other EMF protection products) is assuming you're “fully protected” from EMF radiation just because you're wearing them.
EMF radiation is omnidirectional, meaning it can hit your body from angles your clothing isn't covering, for example:
- A hoodie protects your torso but leaves your legs exposed.
- Boxers and underwear shield some parts of you, but not your thighs or lower back.
- Beanies cover your head but not your neck or face.
Wearing the clothing also might reduce your motivation to find other ways to reduce your exposure to EMF radiation.
2. Comfort vs. Protection trade-off
As I mentioned earlier, shielding fabrics often sacrifice comfort for effectiveness.
Products with higher dB ratings (like 40 dB) tend to be stiffer and less breathable.
Even some of the very best options like HAVN’s hoodie can feel heavier than regular clothing, especially in warm climates.
3. Cost
If we're being honest, EMF protection clothing like what I've talked about in this article is not cheap.
Putting together a simple wardrobe of options to block radiation can add up really quickly.
This unfortunately isn't affordable for everyone. As more companies and products enter the market, competition will likely continue to drive down the price. But for right now, it's quite expensive.
Frequently Asked Questions
Let’s tackle the most common questions I get about EMF protection clothing. These are the ones that keep popping up in my inbox and comments, so if you’re wondering, chances are others are too.
If I missed anything though, please feel free to send me an email or leave a comment.
Does EMF protection clothing block 100% of radiation?
Nope, and anyone claiming it does is not being honest.
As I talked about earlier in this article, EMF clothing works through attenuation. It reduces radiation levels rather than eliminating them.
For example, a shirt with 30 dB shielding blocks 99.9% of RF radiation, but that tiny 0.1% still gets through.
Can I wear EMF protection clothing all day?
You can, but I don’t always recommend it. These garments are best used during high-exposure activities (e.g., travel, work meetings, crowded areas).
Wearing them 24/7 isn’t practical (they’re less breathable than regular clothes) and can create a false sense of security.
Is EMF protection clothing safe for children?
It's absolutely safe. In fact, kids are more vulnerable to EMF radiation due to their thinner skulls and developing bodies.
Brands like Defendershield, Belly Armor, and SYB make EMF-blocking baby blankets, onesies, and kids’ beanies.
That said, focus on minimizing their overall exposure first (e.g., no tablets at bedtime, airplane mode on devices).
How do I know if a product is legit?
This is a tough thing to determine sometimes, especially if you're new to understanding the dangers of EMF radiation.
What I would look for is:
- Independent lab testing: Certifications like IEEE-299 or EN 62209-2.
- Transparent dB ratings: Avoid vague claims like “blocks radiation.”
- Real customer reviews: Check for mentions of comfort, durability, and real-world use.
If a company doesn't publish test results on their website, and won't share them with you, I'd suggest ordering from somewhere else.
Can I wash EMF protection clothing?
You can wash most EMF protection clothing, but gentle care is really important.
Also, be sure to read the tag or product instructions first, as not all EMF-protecting clothing and products can be washed in the washing machine.
In general, though, you can wash your EMF-blocking clothing by:
- Use cold water and mild detergent.
- Avoid fabric softeners (they coat silver fibers, reducing effectiveness).
- Air dry or tumble dry on low heat.
With proper care, quality garments retain 85-90% shielding after 50+ washes.
Final Thoughts
EMF protection clothing isn’t a cure-all, but it can be a powerful tool if used correctly.
Pair it with common-sense habits like distance from devices, reducing screen time, and creating low-EMF zones at home and you’ll significantly lower your exposure.
If you found this guide helpful, share it with someone who’d benefit!
