Do Magnets Block or Protect Against EMF Radiation?

I was recently asked in an email if magnets have the ability to protect the body from EMF radiation, and I didn’t have a clear answer.

So in this post, I’ll tell you everything I’ve learned about how magnets interact with EMF radiation, whether they are able to block it, and if they can be used to boost the body’s natural guard against EMF radiation.

Do Magnets Block EMF Radiation?

The first thing we need to do is talk a little bit about what magnets are so that we can decide if the material itself can be used to shield against EMF radiation.

It’s important to remember that a “magnet” is not material in itself. Rather it refers to any magnetized material. Materials that are commonly magnetized include elements like:

  • Iron
  • Nickel
  • Cobalt

As well as some rare-earth metals like lodestone. These elements are referred to as “ferromagnetic.”

If you’ve read some of my other articles in this series subjects, like:

You’ve probably heard me talk about how some materials don’t block EMF radiation, but rather attenuate it. Physics would define it as a gradual loss of force as energy passes through a material.

This is the case with many materials when it comes to EMF radiation, they don’t block it entirely but do reduce its potency.

To illustrate this, think of how tinted glass attenuates sunlight, the walls of your bedroom attenuate sound, or even how the lead vest you wear during X-rays attenuates the radiation.

There is nothing inherently unique about a magnet that allows it to block or repel EMF radiation, instead, we have to focus on the material that is magnetized, and its attenuation abilities.

For example, a thick sheet of Iron is capable of almost entirely blocking EMF radiation. If that sheet of Iron was magnetized, it would also block EMF radiation, but no better just because it is now a magnet.

So, the short answer to the question of “Do magnets block EMF Radiation” would be:

No, inherently magnets do not block EMF radiation. However, certain metals that do block EMF radiation, can be magnetized.

To illustrate this another way, think of the wide flat magnets on your refrigerator. If you test how well these block EMF radiation, you’ll find that they hardly reduce it at all, and in some cases can increase the readings from your EMF meter.

Refrigerator magnets don’t work well for blocking EMF radiation because they are mostly made of plastic and rubber. Magnetized iron shavings, or iron dust, are mixed with a rubber compound to form the “magnet” part.

So, they are mostly made of plastic or rubber, which does almost nothing to attenuate EMF radiation.

Ok, now that we’ve talked about how magnets can and, in some cases, cannot block EMFs, let’s talk about whether magnets can be used to boost our body’s naturally protective capabilities.

Do Magnets Help Protect Us From EMF Radiation?

There are tons of products on the market touting magnets’ ability to improve our health and protect the body, but do these actually help protect us from EMF radiation?

This is a bit hard to say because there is no definitive science that seems to suggest that having magnets on the body (in the form of EMF protection bracelets, pendants, etc) will protect us from EMF radiation or boost our health.

However, there are alternative health practitioners and experts who believe there are some benefits, such as:

Improved Blood Flow

Some studies have suggested that static magnets worn on the body could improve blood flow. This happens because there is iron in our blood in the form of hemoglobin.

The magnets help to speed up and improve the blood flow, which improves our ability to remove toxins and heavy metals from the body.

Could Help Reduce Risk of Heart Attack

A physicist from Temple University reported that exposure to magnetic fields could help thin human blood, which contains iron.

The thinning of the blood could ultimately lead to fewer heart attacks, but this claim has yet to be substantiated.

All sorts of other claims are made about magnet’s ability to:

  • Improve mood
  • Improve wellbeing
  • Improve metabolism
  • … and much more.

However, none of these have, or really can be, proven.

Final Thoughts

Magnets ultimately are not a great material to block or protect us from, EMF radiation. You’ll continue to see them as part of various EMF protection and wellness jewelry.

I would do my best to look past this aspect and see if the jewelry has anything unique to offer.
