Are Smart Meters Dangerous? What The Research Says (2026)

Short answer: no study has shown that smart meters cause harm at the exposure levels they actually produce, and a smart meter on your wall exposes you to a small fraction of what your own phone does. That’s the research picture, honestly stated.

And yet I still think it’s reasonable to care about where your meter is and what’s on the other side of that wall, because “low compared to a phone” is not the same as “zero,” and the meter is the one transmitter on your house you didn’t choose. Here’s what the research actually says, what a smart meter really emits, and where the sensible middle ground is.

What A Smart Meter Actually Emits

A smart meter is a utility meter with a small radio in it. It reports your electricity usage back to the utility in short bursts, using radiofrequency signals in the same general family as WiFi and cell phones.

The detail that matters is the duty cycle. Your phone can transmit more or less continuously while you use it, pressed against your body. A typical smart meter transmits in brief pulses, often adding up to around a minute or so of total transmit time per day, from a box mounted outside on a wall, with distance and building material between it and you.

RF exposure falls off steeply with distance. At normal indoor living distances from an exterior meter, measured exposure lands at a tiny fraction of what the same measurement shows next to an active cell phone.

What The Research Says

The American Cancer Society’s page on smart meters lands where most health agencies do: smart meters emit RF at levels well below phones, and there’s no evidence linking them to cancer, while acknowledging the research on low-level RF in general is still evolving.

In 2011, the WHO’s cancer agency IARC classified radiofrequency fields broadly as Group 2B, “possibly carcinogenic” (the monograph is public). That classification was driven by heavy cell phone use studies, not meters, and 2B is IARC’s weakest positive category, shared with pickled vegetables and aloe vera extract. The WHO’s own Q&A on electromagnetic fields sums up the overall evidence the same way: no established health effects below international exposure limits.

There is no epidemiological study linking smart meters specifically to any health outcome. Given the exposure math, that’s the expected result: a meter that transmits a minute a day from outside your bedroom wall is a rounding error next to the phone that sleeps on your nightstand.

The Honest Caveats

Two things keep this from being a complete non-issue in my book.

First, meters vary. Some mesh-network meters relay traffic for neighboring homes, which raises their transmit time well above the minimum. You can’t tell from the outside which kind you have, and your utility can.

Second, placement is luck. A meter on the garage wall is a non-event. A meter directly behind the headboard of a bed, on the other side of a few inches of drywall, is the one scenario where I’d actually do something about it, not because studies show harm, but because it’s the highest-exposure version of the situation and the fixes are cheap.

What I’d Actually Do

If the meter sits behind a bed or a couch where someone spends hours: move the furniture to the opposite wall first, because distance is free and works better than anything you can buy.
