While doing research on the best ways to protect ourselves from EMF radiation, I kept coming across products made from an ancient stone called Shungite. I watched videos and read articles, and saw that there were many differing opinions about the power and uses of Shungite. I wanted to create the ultimate resource from all of my research into Shungite and answer questions like:
(Click the links to jump straight to that section!)
Let’s walk through this together: the complete and honest guide to Shungite.
What Is Shungite?
Here are the Technicals:
Shungite is a black, lustrous mineral that is made of more than 98% carbon. First discovered in the Karelia region of Russia near the Shunga village, Shungite was first given the name in the late 1800s.
Shungite itself, however, is estimated to be several billion years old. True Shungite also contains small amounts of fullerenes, which is a microscopic, hollow, pure carbon molecule.
Fullerenes are believed to be an extremely powerful anti-oxidant and are being vigorously studied for there is a multitude of benefits for both health, and nano-technologies.
Interestingly, Shungite was originally made of almost pure carbon, but today, the term “Shungite” is being used to describe rocks and objects that contain some Shungite, but are not pure.
Shungite products are typically broken up into the following categories:
Shungite 1: 90-100% carbon content
2: 45-90% carbon content
3: 20-45% carbon content
4: 10-20% carbon content
5: <10% carbon content
If you’re looking at the description of a product that claims to be shungite, pay close attention to the listed carbon content of the product. True Shungite should have 90-100% carbon content and is often more expensive (but don’t let the price fool you, find the carbon content).
For example, this listing for Shungite on Amazon contains 90% or more carbon content. These are real Shungite Stones.
When buying shungite, the stones are also sometimes classified into categories depending on luster. These categories are usually bright, semi-bright, semi-dull, and dull. Often times when purchasing Shungite products like pyramids or pendants, this will not even be listed. This is more commonly listed when buying real Shungite stones.
Where is Shungite Found?
Shungite is primarily found in a specific region of Russia. The largest deposit is in the Lake Onega are of the Karelia region, near Shunga village. See the map on the right for reference.
Although this is the primary deposit of Shungite, it is not the only one. The mineral has also been discovered, in much smaller quantities, in two other regions of Russia. The first is in the volcanic rocks at Kamchatka, and the other was discovered in a coal mine near Chelyabinsk.
The main deposit of Shungite is estimated to contain almost 300,000,000 tons, so we won’t be running out any time soon.
Although Shungite used to be quite difficult to obtain, it is now quite easy to purchase. The increased popularity of the stone is primarily due to it’s powerful believed abilities to heal the body, protect against EMF radiation, and cleanse and purify water.
In fact, Peter the Great established the first spa in Russia near Karelia to take advantage of the purifying abilities of Shungite. Today, the anti-bacterial and water purifying abilities of the stone have been confirmed in modern labs.
How Was Shungite Formed?
This is something that scientists do not yet know, or agree on yet. There are several beliefs on where Shungite come from, with the two most popular theories being an ancient sea or ocean, or from an ancient meteorite.
The first theory is that there used to be an ancient ocean, sea, or lake, billions of years ago in the area that is now North-Western Russia. In this body of water, there was a very high concentration of early microscopic organisms.
Over the millennia, these organisms died and their deposits formed at the sea floor. The biological nature of these organisms would help to explain the unusually high amounts of carbon. Shifting of the Earth’s plates over time moved this deposit from this seabed onto land and it settled and concentrated in one area.
The other popular scientific theory is that the Shungite deposit is the result of a landed meteorite long ago. This would help to explain why it is almost entirely concentrated in one area, as well as the high carbon content.
Either way, part of the appeal of Shungite, beyond it’s amazing and unique abilities and characteristics, is its mysterious origins.
What Are The Benefits of Shungite?
Shungite is an amazing stone and mineral and has many proven benefits, as well as many believed benefits. First let’s talk about the benefits that are easily seen, understood, and proven.

Shungite For Water Purification
There are quite a few ways of purifying water and making it safe to drink, including boiling, iodine, chlorine drops, water filters, ultraviolet lights, and much more. The problem is that many of these methods, although they will kill bacteria and organisms, will also degrade the quality of the water and increase the number of salts and heavy metals present in the water. Other methods, like the use of chlorine or iodine, can introduce dangerous chemicals into the water.
This is why Shungite has become so popular for its use in purifying water.
Placing shungite stones in water and letting them sit for a few days produces what most people call “shungite water.” This water goes all the way back to Czar Peter of Russia, who would provide water purified with shungite to his soldiers, and ran the first ever spa in Russia near the Karelia deposits.
Modern tests since then have confirmed the amazing water purifying capabilities of shungite, and it is now commonly found in water filtration systems.
Shungite has extremely powerful antibacterial capabilities. When the power of shungite to purify water was tested, harmful bacteria were artificially introduced into the water and after as little as an hour, the concentration of these bacteria was reduced dramatically.
Shungite has the ability to clean things like nitrates, chlorine, bacteria, and heavy metal from water. It also can clean the visual appearance of dirty water and improve the taste.
Many healers and naturopaths recommend “shungite water” for all types of illnesses such as:
Cold and Flu
Allergies
Kidney and liver issues
Diabetes
Heart Disease
Fatigue
Headaches
General wellbeing
And much much more.
How To Make Shungite Water (The Right Way)
Step 1 – Get Some Quality Shungite Stones or Chips
This is an important step because the quality and purity of the Shungite are essential to make healthy and healing shungite water.
After doing a fair amount of research, I think the best shungite stones to purchase would be these that you can pick up on Amazon. You don’t want a formed pendant, or a carved triangle, you want just the raw stones with a very high amount of carbon. Only quality stones like these will have the fullerenes that are so important.
Step 2 – Clean The Stones
Another important step is cleaning the stones before you use them to make drinking water. When you purchase real stones like the ones recommended above, you may notice they still have a small amount of dirt on them.
Take all the stones and place them in a Tupperware or bowl of filtered water. Then with a small brush, even a toothbrush, gently scrub the shungite while it still in the water. Keep replacing the water and brushing until the cleaning no longer dirties the water whatsoever.
You can also place the stones in boiling water to cleanse them if you prefer.
Take the shungite stones you purchased and place them in a large, preferably, glass jar or container, use about 10 stones per gallon, but using more won’t hurt anything.
Let the water rest with the stones for at least 6-12 hours, but preferably overnight. Then, simply remove the stones and drink!
Shungite For EMF Protection
Ok, now this is what I was so excited to research. There are tons of products on the market that are made out of shungite, and many or most of those claim some level of protection from EMF radiation. The question is, does shungite really protect against EMF Radiation?
Basically, I would say that it does likely block or absorb a good amount of EMF radiation, as you can see in the video below.
Shungite is believed to have the ability to absorb and completely neutralize the dangerous frequencies from EMF radiation. The reason that Shungite is believed to be able to do this is due to the fullerenes inside.
Almost no materials in the world contain these fullerenes, which are hollow, pure carbon, molecules. These unique molecules are what scientists believe give shungite the ability to block EMF radiation.
In fact, the group of scientists who discovered fullerenes collectively won a Nobel prize in the late 1990s. Until fullerenes were found to be in Shungite, their existence in nature wasn’t even proven.
How Do You Use Shungite For EMF Protection?
For this, you will just need to choose a Shungite product that fits your needs, and test to see how well it works for you. I always recommend the new TriField TF2 (read my review) as it’s simple to use, lasts forever, is extremely accurate, and measures all three types of EMF radiation. If you’re looking for a low-cost EMF meter I really like the Erickhill EMF Meter.
Order the product, test it both with an EMF meter, as well as a test to see how it makes you feel when you’re around electronics. If you notice you are less fatigued, get fewer headaches, and generally feel better when you’re on your computer, or cell phone or using other devices, it’s likely that it’s making a difference.
Best Shungite Products for EMF Protection
Shungite Pyramid
A really popular option is getting a shungite pyramid, like this one from Amazon. These pyramids are made out of large single pieces of shungite, and both the amount of shungite, along with the shape, is believed to provide a large amount of general electromagnetic radiation protection.
A shungite pyramid would be ideal for putting near a constant source of radiation, like your home router, your laptop, your pc, your microwave, etc.
If you purchase a quality shungite product that actually contains high amounts of carbon and fullerenes, then it will be effective at absorbing the radiation. It stands to reason that the more shungite you have around sources of radiation, the better job it is likely to do.
Shungite Plate For Cell PhonesThis is another product that I do like, for the most part. Since shungite has the ability to block or absorb EMF radiation without affecting cell signal, shungite as a product for cell phone radiation seems like a no-brainer.I am not 100% convinced that shungite has the ability to block 100% of the radiation from a cell phone that is placed against your head, but I do believe that it can help reduce the amount of radiation in general.
You can get a set of 5 plates from Amazon for relatively inexpensive. You simply tape or glue (do this at your own risk!) the disks to the back of the phone and then use it like normal.
For me, although this product does make sense, it does seem a bit inconvenient to have a bulky plate on the back of your phone. Also, for cell phone protection I would rather have the ensure blocking of something like a DefenderShield cell phone case. Check out my full DefenderShield review for more on those.
Shungite Jewelry
This is one of the Shungite products that I think makes the most sense. First of all, knowing that Shungite is likely to absorb and block ambient EMF radiation around it, wearing it would provide at least some level of constant protection. Shungite earrings could help protect the brain, shungite necklaces and pendants and help protect the heart and lungs, shungite bracelets can help protect the bloodstream and nervous systems.
On top of believed healing and chakra balancing abilities of the fact that it is likely to protect from EMF radiation makes it a bit of a no-brainer.
Luckily for the people wearing it, shungite is actually a really beautiful dark stone that makes for very attractive jewelry. For all these reasons, shungite jewelry is extremely popular right now.
Here are a few of my favorite pieces of shungite jewelry.
Best Shungite Pendant
This one is my absolute favorite shungite pendant for a few reasons (in fact I got one for my wife!) First of all, it is just a raw piece of pure shungite straight from the primary shungite deposit in Karelian, Russia. So the carbon content is 98%+, which is what you want in any shungite product.
Next, since it is just a raw piece of shungite, every necklace is completely unique and very beautiful.
It is also quite inexpensive considering!
Although, I’ll just throw out there that the pendant that we’re now using is from Q-link, and we love it. It’s not a shungite pendant, but it may be worth looking into.
Best Shungite Earrings
The best shungite earrings I’ve been able to find are these ones from Amazon. These are by far the most popular shungite earrings on the market right now.
Also made of pure shungite, these earrings are actually quite attractive.
Best Shungite Bracelet
This bracelet that you can also get on Amazon is certainly my favorite shungite bracelet that I’ve come across. It is made of polished real shungite stone in the form of beads.
Healing Benefits of Shungite
Ok, now that we’ve talked about many of the known benefits of shungite, like it’s ability to cleanse and purify water, and it’s ability to absorb and shield EMF radiation, now let’s talk about some of the believed benefits.
The following are all believed, or observed benefits that are much harder to prove.
First of all, for hundreds of years, shungite has been used for it’s healing benefits. From the days of Czar Peter of Russia to today, Shungite has been believed to help improve luck, to ease anxiety and depression, improve sleep and dozens of other benefits.
Some people also believe that it has near-mystical powers to do things like “cloak” or absorb negative energy, keep you safe from dark magic, and even increase your ability to find love.
Shungite is also claimed to improve energy, improve luck, and just generally improve your life dramatically.
How To Use Shungite For Healing
Again, I want to stress that the healing benefits of Shungite have long been believed, but I don’t personally believe they have been proven. That won’t stop me from using it for all of It’s amazing known benefits.
Most healers or people who would prescribe shungite for It’s healing abilities would tell you that the best thing to do would be to wear it. Like the products I talked about above for EMF protection, these same products would also provide the healing capabilities of the shungite.
Whether it’s a pendant, earrings, a bracelet or even a broach, the healing benefits can come from any of these products. Just be sure the product you get is actually pure shungite like the products I recommended above.
Many people also believe in the ability for shungite to cleanse bad energy from a home. These people believe that placing something like a shungite pyramid around the house can dramatically improve the feng shui and bring positive energy and good luck to the home.
